Scheduling data collection to happen
regularly is part of getting the most out of Capacity Advisor. With
regularly collected data, comparing workload activity on different
systems and at different times will make the most sense. If data is collected sporadically, it may be difficult to understand
how moving a workload will impact the systems where it will run. The
great power of using Capacity Advisor is unleashed when it has plenty
of consistently collected data to work on.
You can schedule data collection with Capacity Advisor using Collect Capacity Advisor Data ALL for All VSE Resources or Collect Capacity Advisor Data... for
any selected set of systems. HP recommends that you schedule data
collection for all systems each day to ensure that you have sufficient
data for analysis. To insure this, starting
with VSEMgr 3.0, a task, described next in Automatic Data
Collection for All VSE Resources, is created during configuration; this task runs each night to collect
utilization data.
Automatic Data Collection for All VSE Resources
During configuration of VSE Management
software, a scheduled task named “Collect ALL Capacity Advisor
Data Nightly” is created to automatically collect utilization
data from all your discovered VSE resources. This task is owned by
the “root” user and runs once each day at 12:00 AM (midnight).
This ensures that your utilization
data is collected regularly and in a timely manner for all
your VSE resources.
This task runs the menu action Optimize
Capacity Advisor
Collect
Capacity Advisor Data
with a target selection
of the All VSE Resources query collection as the scheduled task.
Because this task is owned by “root”, only the “root” user will see the task and its results. When logged
into the web interface, the root user can execute the menu action Tasks & Logs
View All Scheduled Tasks... to perform any of the following actions:
Run the task immediately.
View the results of the previous task executions.
Edit the task to:
Schedule the task to run at a different time.
Collecting Data for a Workload with
a HP Serviceguard Package
Starting with VSEMgr 3.0, users will be
able to associate a VSE-monitored workload with a Serviceguard package.
This association will allow VSE Virtualization Manager to show workloads
moving from one system to another within minutes of the Serviceguard
migration. It will also allow Capacity Advisor to show an uninterrupted
history of utilization data for a workload across these migrations.
Associating VSE monitored workloads and
Serviceguard packages requires that VSEMgr V3.0 has been installed
on the Central Management Server (CMS) and that the corresponding
version of the Utilization Provider has been installed on all member
systems of the Serviceguard cluster. All nodes of the cluster must
be running the appropriate version of the Utilization Provider. For
specific versioning information, see the HP Systems Insight Manager
screen: Help About HP Systems Insight Manager.

 | NOTE: In some situations, where time or time zones on a server are
incorrect, it may appear that data collected has only old data. For
more information on this topic, see the Capacity Advisor
Error Messages appendix in this document. |
