Overview

HP Capacity Advisor provides a collection of utilities for the capacity planner. Using it involves the basic operations listed below.

To use Capacity Advisor, you must:

Access the product (see “Accessing Capacity Advisor”).
Gather data (see “Gathering Data for Capacity Advisor”).

Once you have accessed the product and gathered data, you can use Capacity Advisor to:

View graphs and review data. Tasks include:
- Accessing the Profile Viewer. The Profile Viewer provides a graphical display and a tabular summary of resource utilization. See “Using the Profile Viewer”.
- Generating and reviewing reports. Reports can combine information from multiple systems and workloads. See “Utilization Reports Overview”.
Work with scenarios (simulations that allow you to ask "what if?" questions based on real data). Tasks include:
- Creating scenarios. You can select the systems to use in the scenario, name it, and provide a short description. See “Creating a Scenario”.
- Editing scenarios. You can adjust the simulation parameters (such as the interval, beginning and ending dates), move workloads and virtual machines, and create and edit systems. See “Editing a Scenario”.
- Copying a scenario, allowing you to start with an existing scenario to build a new one. See “Copying a Scenario”
- Renaming a scenario. See “Renaming a Scenario”
- Viewing or modifying changes to a scenario. See “Undoing or Editing Changes to Scenario”.
- Controlling the behavior of a scenario by modifying the time interval and reported metric. See “ Controlling Scenario Behavior”.
- Deleting old scenarios. See “Deleting a Scenario”.
Work with systems within a scenario. Systems can be real systems or pure simulations that represent new systems, and can be either physical hardware or virtual systems. Tasks include:
- Creating systems. See “Creating a System”.
- Adding an existing system. See “Adding an Existing System”.
- Editing systems. See “Editing a System”.
- Moving virtual machines. See “Moving a Virtual Machine”.
- Removing systems. See “Removing a System”.
Work with workloads within a scenario. Workloads represent applications running on systems and can be moved across systems within a scenario. Tasks include:
- Creating workloads. See “Creating a Workload”.
- Editing workloads. See “Editing a Workload”.
- Moving workloads. See “Moving a Workload”.
- Parking workloads. Parking a workload removes the effects of the workload from the scenario, without losing the definition of the workload. See “Parking a Workload”.
- Removing workloads. See “Removing a Workload”.
