For VMware hosts and virtual machines to display the correct relationships in VSE, you must configure HP ProLiant Essentials Virtual Machine Management Pack (VMM) to work with HP SIM. Use Procedure 3-7 after installing VSE and HP SIM.

Procedure 3-7 Configure VMM for Use With HP SIM

  1. Make sure that VMM is installed, and that the service “HP Virtual Machine Management Services” is running.

  2. Add VMware hosts as managed systems in HP SIM. HP SIM should discover the VMware virtual machines; you do not have to add them individually.

  3. Configure Secure Shell (SSH) access using Configure->Configure or Repair Agents, as described in VSE Management Software Version 4.0 Installation and Update Guide for HP-UX.

  4. Assign a VMM license to each VMware host using Deploy->License Manager.

  5. Install the VMM agent software to the hosts using Deploy->Deploy Drivers, Firmware and Agents->Install VMM Agent.

  6. Register the VMware hosts with VMM using Configure->Virtual Machine Host Registration->Register VM Host.

  7. (Optional) Rediscover the VMware hosts using Options->Identify Systems, to make sure that host information is complete.

Troubleshooting VMM Configuration

This section describes how to recover from VMM configuration problems characterized by any of the following types of error messages:

  • errors regarding “JBDC connection

  • unable to find host

  • host and guest not associated correctly

If any of these problems occur, use Procedure 3-8 to restore operations. These problems may occur more frequently if HP SIM is restarted frequently.

Procedure 3-8 Recover From VMM Configuration Problems

  1. Unregister the VMM host if it has been previously registered with HP SIM, using Configure->Virtual machine host registration->Unregister VM host.

  2. Restart the VMM service “HP Virtual Machine Management Services” using the Windows Services interface.

  3. Restart HP SIM.

  4. Register the VMM host again, using Configure->Virtual Machine Host Registration->Register VM Host.

  5. Rediscover the VMware hosts using Options->Identify Systems.

NOTE: A VMM host can only be registered with a single CMS. If another CMS registers the host, the original CMS will not identify the host and guests correctly.
